The First Five: Kade’s Dark Embrace, Book 1 by Kym Grosso

An erotic paranormal romance…

After a series of girls are ritualistically murdered on the cold streets of Philadelphia, seasoned detective, Sydney Willows, is forced to work with sexy, alpha vampire, Kade Issacson. While working the case, Sydney finds herself inexplicably drawn to Kade, fighting the passion she feels towards him. Kade, determined to solve the case and mete out justice, is captivated by the independent, fiery detective. As he attempts to protect her from a very real murderer, Kade grows concerned that the beautiful, but very human detective, could easily end up dead should she tangle with supernatural forces that are beyond her control.

The investigation leads them into a dark and dangerous world, deep in the heart of New Orleans, where together, they search for the perpetrators of the Voodoo killings. Sydney soon becomes the target of the killer and ends up fighting for her life and love in the Big Easy. If she makes it out alive, will she give into the intoxicating desire she feels for Kade?

This Kindle book is currently $0.00 on Amazon.com, so there’s no reason not to give it a look. That being said, FREE doesn’t always mean GOOD. Everybody has their own way of figuring out whether a book is worth reading. I have The First Five test. If I read through the initial paragraph of a book and find myself hooked/intrigued, then I’m giving it a read! If the prose of a book doesn’t capture my interest, it’s not going on the TBR (to-be-read) shelf. I have been a little lax in my blogging lately, but I figured sharing my thoughts before vacation would be a great way to kick off the New Year. Without further ado, let’s read through the first five sentences of Kade’s Dark Embrace by Kym Grosso.

The sultry, summer night bustled with mortals seeking entertainment in the heart of the city.

PAUSE!! This is a great first line. It sets the scene perfectly. Readers love being engaged and this sentence accomplished that. I was impressed by the atmosphere and intrigue Kym Grosso achieved. Also, her introduction of a paranormal element changed everything. Mortals. It may have been one word, but it was one well placed word. Writing is an art and Kym Grosso proves herself an artist with this sentence. Now, back to the book.

Listening to the sounds in the distance, Kade recognized a familiar jazz song being played by street performers. After the long flight to Philadelphia, he needed to stretch and gather his thoughts. Unable to resist the lure of the waterfront, he leaned against the cool railing, watching the lights of the boats passing by and flickering in the rushing water. Sensing great evil on the horizon, he breathed deeply, letting the sight of the water soothe him.

Okay. Sentences three through four are lengthy and ‘the’ is definitely getting overused, but the atmosphere Kym’s created demands further exploration. Her last line promises a ‘great evil.’ This is what readers love. We want to know the stakes. We crave those ‘shit just got real’ moments. As of right now, we don’t know the stakes completely, but we know where things are headed, and that’s great. Based on my review of the First Five, Kade’s Dark Embrace is worth a read. Be warned, this book is the first in a series and you’ll probably get hooked.
